Chiropractic Adjustment
Spinal manipulation to restore proper alignment, relieve joint restrictions, and reduce pain. Suitable for patients dealing with back pain, neck pain, headaches, or general discomfort caused by misalignment.
What a chiropractic adjustment involves
An adjustment applies a controlled, precise force to a joint that isn't moving the way it should, most often in the spine. At North River, Dr. Johns bases the direction and style of each adjustment on the mirror-image method, correcting toward your spine's ideal position rather than a generic one-size-fits-all technique.
Adjustments here are delivered manually, on a drop table, or with a handheld instrument, depending on your body, your comfort, and what the correction calls for. That flexibility is part of why the same approach works for a teenager and a grandparent.
The pop or click you sometimes hear is gas releasing from the fluid inside the joint, the same thing that happens when you crack a knuckle. It's a normal part of the joint moving, not bone grinding on bone, and you don't need to hear it for the adjustment to be working.
A restricted joint rarely stays isolated. Muscles around it change how they fire to protect it, and nearby joints often pick up extra motion to compensate, which is part of why a misalignment in one area of your spine can end up causing pain somewhere else entirely.
The three ways we deliver an adjustment
Manual adjusting uses Dr. Johns' hands to deliver a quick, targeted force directly to the joint. It's the most traditional style of adjustment and the one most people picture when they think of chiropractic care.
Drop-table adjusting uses a table with sections that drop slightly as the adjustment is delivered, which adds a gentle mechanical assist and reduces the direct force needed through the joint. Many patients find it more comfortable, especially in the low back.
Instrument adjusting uses a handheld device to deliver a precise, low-force impulse to a specific segment. It's often the better fit for patients who are sensitive to manual pressure, including some older adults and young children.
Which method fits best isn't fixed from visit to visit. Dr. Johns adjusts the approach based on how you're responding, which is part of why the same patient might experience more than one style of adjustment over the course of a plan.
How we find what's actually misaligned
New patients start with digital X-rays and computerized postural analysis, so the adjustment plan is based on what's actually happening in your spine, not just where it hurts today. That imaging becomes the baseline we compare against as care progresses.
Digital X-rays use significantly less radiation than older film X-rays and let Dr. Johns pull the images up and review them with you the same visit, rather than waiting on processing.
It also means two patients with the same complaint, like low back pain, can end up with different adjustment plans, because the structural cause behind the pain isn't always the same.
What to expect at your visit
Before any hands-on treatment, Dr. Johns reviews your health history and goals with you directly, so the plan accounts for anything else going on with your body, not just the spine.
During the adjustment itself, you may feel a quick stretch or pressure and hear a pop or click as a joint releases. Most patients feel looser afterward, though some notice mild soreness for a day, similar to how a muscle feels after a new workout.
It's normal for a plan to involve multiple visits as your structure corrects over time. Dr. Johns will tell you what to expect visit by visit rather than leaving it open ended.
Conditions it can help with
Because an adjustment addresses the joint restriction itself rather than a single symptom, it tends to help a wide range of complaints that share a structural cause.
- Back pain and neck pain
- Tension headaches tied to spinal or postural cause
- Sciatica
- General stiffness or restricted mobility from misalignment
- Joint restrictions following an old injury
Why North River
Dr. Johns has fifteen years of experience and has treated patients from newborns to the elderly, including professional athletes across the NFL, NHL, MLB, ATP, and AMA. Every plan starts with objective imaging, not a guess.
In that time he's worked with more than 2,000 patients, which means most of what walks through the door, from a first-time low back strain to a decades-old postural pattern, isn't new to him.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does a chiropractic adjustment hurt?+
Most patients feel pressure or a release, not pain. If a joint is already inflamed or acutely injured, we'll adjust our approach so treatment stays comfortable.
How many adjustments will I need?+
It depends on how long the misalignment has been developing and how your body responds. We'll lay out a specific plan after your exam and imaging, not a generic package.
Is it safe for kids and older adults?+
Yes. Dr. Johns treats patients from newborns to the elderly, and the technique, whether manual, drop-table, or instrument, is chosen to match the patient in front of him.
Do I need X-rays before my first adjustment?+
New patients typically start with digital X-rays and postural analysis so the plan is based on your actual structure. We'll walk you through what we find before any treatment begins.
Will my insurance cover chiropractic adjustments?+
Coverage varies by plan. Call our office and we can help you understand what your policy covers before your first visit.
